Insurance coverage for breast reconstructionHow breast reconstruction surgery will be covered is a common concern shared by many women who have had or will have mastectomy surgery. While there is no rubber stamp answer to this question, one very important thing to know about is the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 (WHCRA). This act, which is administered by the U.S. Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services, makes most insurance companies responsible for covering reconstruction after mastectomy. In addition to the initial reconstruction, it also includes coverage for all stages of reconstruction, including procedures that might be needed to achieve a symmetrical result.
