Implant-Based to Autologous Breast Reconstruction

breast implant to autologous reconstructionWhat is Autologous Breast Reconstruction?

We have noticed that several of our patients seeking natural or DIEP flap breast reconstruction have previously had implant-based reconstructions with which they are either dissatisfied or have had complications.

A paper presented at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons supports our observation. This study, carried out by Dr. Joseph Disa and colleagues at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, found that women who converted from prosthetic or implant reconstruction to one that used their own natural or autologous tissue were likely to be far more satisfied with their results. A summary of their study can be found here.
