Implant-Based to Autologous Breast Reconstruction

What is Autologous Breast Reconstruction?

Converting Implant-based breast reconstruction to natural or Autologous Breast Reconstruction.

We have noticed that several of our patients seeking natural or DIEP flap breast reconstruction have previously had implant-based reconstructions with which they are either dissatisfied or have had complications.

A paper presented at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons supports our observation. This study, carried out by Dr. Joseph Disa and colleagues at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, found that women who converted from prosthetic or implant reconstruction to one that used their own natural or autologous tissue were likely to be far more satisfied with their results. A summary of their study can be found here.

If you would like additional information, we have previously written about revising or converting reconstructions in our blog and have information on our main website that can be accessed by clicking here.
